Construction Bookkeeper

The Construction Bookkeeper will handle all day-to-day accounting functions for multiple projects, with an emphasis on public works compliance, certified payroll, job cost tracking, and accurate financial reporting. This position requires strong attention to detail, the ability to meet deadlines, and a deep understanding of construction accounting and reconciliation.

Job Responsibilities

  • Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable across multiple active construction projects
  • Prepare and submit monthly pay applications, progress billings, and lien releases
  • Process and reconcile certified payroll reports in compliance with state and federal prevailing wage laws
  • Track and manage subcontractor retainage, verify quantities, and ensure accurate release upon project closeout
  • Administer employee benefit deductions, fringes, and benefit reporting within certified payroll and accounting systems
  • Perform bank, fuel, and credit card reconciliations, including tracking and matching employee receipts
  • Enter and categorize credit card and bank charges appropriately under COGS or overhead accounts
  • Reconcile rock, asphalt, concrete, and materials usage for accuracy between purchase records, delivery tickets, and invoices
  • Maintain accurate balance sheet and profit & loss reports, including assets, liabilities, loans, and depreciation schedules
  • Support monthly and quarterly CIP/WIP reporting to ensure accurate representation of project costs and earned revenue
  • Maintain employee files and ensure compliance with required documentation
  • Onboard new hires
  • Obtain and manage customer W-9s and Certificates of Insurance (COIs)
  • Prepare and remit weekly EFTPS payroll tax payments, and assist with quarterly and annual filings
  • Support project managers with job cost tracking, COGS categorization, and budget-to-actual analysis
  • Ensure proper tracking and reporting of use tax on materials and equipment
  • Help coordinate and document monthly safety meetings (agendas, topics, and attendance tracking)
  • Provide general administrative and accounting support as needed to ensure smooth financial operations across both companies

Job Skills & Qualifications

  • 3+ years of bookkeeping experience in the construction industry
  • Experience with public works projects, prevailing wage compliance, and certified payroll reporting
  • Strong understanding of use tax application and COGS categorization
  • Experience with maintaining accurate balance sheets, P&L statements, and CIP/WIP reporting
  • Proficiency in tracking assets, liabilities, and loan balances
  • Experience with benefit and fringe reporting
  • Proficient in QuickBooks Desktop and Microsoft Excel
  • Solid knowledge of job cost accounting, progress billing, and retention tracking
  • Excellent attention to detail, accuracy, and organization
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
